Barometric Distribution for Two Types of Particles
_____________________________________________________
In this experiment red and green particles move in a
homogeneous vertical gravitational field. The mass of the green
particles is three times greater than the mass of the red ones. The
two on-line diagrams show the vertical density distribution for
the green and red particles, respectively.
The initial setup of the particles is somewhat bizarre:
the red ones are located near the floor while the green ones are
distributed homogeneously in a tall rectangle near the right border
of the vessel. The initial velocities are almost zero.
The massive green particles fall down into the layer of the red
ones, the red ones will squirt up. After several thousand time steps
both vertical density distribution functions will fluctuate around
the theoretical exponential curve. Since the two types of particles
have different masses, the lighter red ones reach higher elevations
than the heavier green ones.
<F2> : switch ON/OFF tracing of a randomly selected GREEN particle
<F3> : switch ON/OFF tracing of a randomly selected RED particle
<F4> : switch ON/OFF shot noise
<F5> : switch ON/OFF mutual collisions of the particles
<P> : temporarily suspend the simulation, resume it by pressing
any key
<Esc>: stop the simulation
