- Barometric Distribution for Two Types of Particles
- _____________________________________________________
-
- In this experiment red and green particles move in a
- homogeneous vertical gravitational field. The mass of the green
- particles is three times greater than the mass of the red ones. The
- two on-line diagrams show the vertical density distribution for
- the green and red particles, respectively.
- The initial setup of the particles is somewhat bizarre:
- the red ones are located near the floor while the green ones are
- distributed homogeneously in a tall rectangle near the right border
- of the vessel. The initial velocities are almost zero.
-
- The massive green particles fall down into the layer of the red
- ones, the red ones will squirt up. After several thousand time steps
- both vertical density distribution functions will fluctuate around
- the theoretical exponential curve. Since the two types of particles
- have different masses, the lighter red ones reach higher elevations
- than the heavier green ones.
-
- <F2> : switch ON/OFF tracing of a randomly selected GREEN particle
- <F3> : switch ON/OFF tracing of a randomly selected RED particle
- <F4> : switch ON/OFF shot noise
- <F5> : switch ON/OFF mutual collisions of the particles
- <P> : temporarily suspend the simulation, resume it by pressing
- any key
- <Esc>: stop the simulation
